ESPN analyst Barry Melrose is never shy about sharing his opinions, unconventional or otherwise, and his latest is sure to raise a few eyebrows across the hockey world.
Appearing on the NHL Network studio show NHL Tonight, Melrose ranked New Jersey Devils tough-guy-turned-scorer David Clarkson as the top power forward in the NHL, ahead of Milan Lucic of the Boston Bruins and Calgary Flames star Jarome Iginla. He then made a compelling case for his pick.
"He's among the league leaders in goals this year, scored over 30 goals last year," Melrose said of Clarkson, pointing out the 28-year-old's improvement since his 2006-07 debut and noting that Clarkson's recent play even has the attention of Canadian Olympic team scouts. "He's made himself one of the best forwards in the NHL," Melrose said. "Not just power forwards."
