There have been a lot of trade rumors swirling around Brian Dozier of the Twins, Andrew McCutchen of the Pirates and Jose Quintana of the White Sox. There has also been a lot of speculation about what their actual trade value is, when the best time for those teams to actually trade these star players might be and what teams they really fit best in various trade scenarios. Let’s answer those questions with each player.
2017 stats: 5.2 WAR, 13-12, 3.20 ERA, 3.56 FIP, 1.16 WHIP
Contract status: 2017: $7 million; 2018: $8.5 million; 2019: $10.5 million (team option); 2020: $11.5 million (team option).
Best time to trade him for maximum value: At the trade deadline on July 31.
The White Sox have been dangling him this offseason, and they’re asking for a huge haul in return -- which they should. However, because they haven’t been able to make a deal at this point, and haven’t had an offer that’s close to their asking price, they might be better off waiting to trade Quintana at the July trade deadline, when there would be more of a sense of urgency and competition from contending teams to land him.
