Can the Gators win the SEC?

Year 2 of the Will Muschamp era began with a thud.

The Florida Gators' lackluster performance versus Bowling Green on Saturday featured 14 penalty flags and 14 first downs -- numbers that were emblematic of a 2011 Florida team that slogged through a winless October. Week 1 didn't provide us with many answers about a team that is one of the toughest in the nation to figure out. Is Florida, a team loaded with talent but exhibiting significant flaws in critical aspects of the game, capable of contending for an SEC championship in 2012?

After spending the weekend up close and personal with the Gators in the Swamp, it is clear to me that two key areas must improve -- and improve in a hurry -- if this team is going to live up to its potential, the standards set by some of its recent predecessors and the lofty expectations of a rabid fan base.
