Legendary Michigan Wolverines coach Bo Schembechler brought a phrase to the program that has remained for the past 40 years: "Those who stay will be champions."

And the coach put his mantra to the test. Schembechler was famous for measuring the resolve of his teams in training camp in an effort to find the players who were willing to do whatever it took to outlast the toughest of times. He valued perseverance, dedication and above all else, loyalty, striving to create the team-first attitude he craved in his teams.

First-year starting QB Devin Gardner has already made good on the first part of that axiom. Will he come through on the second? We'll have a better idea after Michigan's Saturday night matchup with Notre Dame (8 p.m. ET, ESPN and WatchESPN).

Let's take a look at what has brought Gardner to this point and whether he has what it takes to beat the Fighting Irish.
