Recruiting Insiders: Week 8 news

Notre Dame and Miami had the biggest weekends. The Irish routed USC in front of a number of top targets while the Hurricanes bolstered their class with a new commitment.

Penn State is closing the gap with Ohio State in FPI, which predicts strength above average (in points per game) going forward.

ESPN's "College GameDay" is headed to Columbus for Ohio State's home showdown against Penn State, a Top 10 matchup with huge playoff implications. Ohio State will make its 40th appearance on the show and will host for the 17th time (most among any school) and the second this season. Penn State makes its 18th appearance and will be on consecutive shows after hosting GameDay this past week for the Michigan game.

Seth Walder ESPN Analytics

Penn State may have impressed last night against Michigan, but FPI is still not particularly bullish on the Nittany Lions' chances to win the Big Ten. The model gives them an 18% chance to win the conference, behind Wisconsin (30%) and Ohio State (52%).

Seth Walder ESPN Analytics

After routing USC last night, Notre Dame received a 2.7-point upgrade to its FPI rating and moved up three spots in the FPI rankings to No. 5. No new teams entered the top 10, and the order of the top four teams did not change.

From ESPN Stats & Info: Penn State's Saquon Barkley has the nation's longest active streak of games with a touchdown (14). He last didn't reach the end zone against Ohio State in PSU's win last fall. Ohio State allows just 1.3 yards after contact on runs, and despite Barkley's brilliance against Michigan, he had only 6 rush yards after contact.

X factor for Ohio State down the stretch: J.T. Barrett

Barrett is once again putting up gaudy numbers against the teams the Buckeyes should beat. He can cement his legacy as an all-timer by proving he can make clutch plays in the close games, too.

A young corner can do a lot to help beef up an NFL secondary. Luckily, there will be some quality options in 2018, including one who has moved into the top 15. Todd McShay ranks the best prospects in next year's draft.

Ranking the Power 5 conferences by entertainment value: Big Ten

The Big Ten has three teams ranked in the top six of the AP Top 25 and five included in the top 20. If that isn't enough, it has the best rivalry game, the best collection of coaches and the game's most electrifying player.

Barrett, Jacobs, Kuhbander named Big Ten Players of the Week

J.T. Barrett was named the Big Ten's Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after an impressive performance in Ohio State's win vs. Nebraska. Leon Jacobs takes home the second Defensive Player of the Week award for Wisconsin this month, while Charlie Kuhbander is the first Northwestern player to win Special Teams Player of the Week since Solomon Vault in October 2016.

Buckeye O stands out in Husker rout

Ohio State just edges out Oklahoma State for FBS' most efficient offense from Week 7. Two Pac-12 stalwarts, Stanford and Arizona, turned in pretty sharp performances as well.

Barrett stood above the rest in Week 7

After torching Nebraska both through the air (27-of-33, 325 yards, 5 TD) and on the ground (10 carries, 48 yards, 2 TD), Ohio State's J.T. Barrett finished with the weekend's best QBR. Perhaps more impressive is that Army's Ahmad Bradshaw had the fourth-best QBR despite not completing a pass in the Black Knights' win over Eastern Michigan.

The Alabama Crimson Tide, at -125, are now odds-on favorites to win the national championship at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas. Ohio State and Clemson are the only other teams with single-digit odds.
