California holiday tournaments recap

It was that time of the year to head up north to San Luis Obispo for two of the better holiday tournaments in the Mission Prep Christmas Classic and National Prep Classic. Behind the outstanding play of tournament MVP Brandon Perry, Taft (Woodland Hills, Calif.) claimed its third straight Mission Prep title by defeating La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad, Calif.), 58-52. Matt Shrigley, who is headed to San Diego State in the fall, tossed in 19 points for La Costa Canyon.

Standout players

Matt Shrigley (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon)
2012, SG, 6-foot-5, 190 pounds
College: San Diego State

Shrigley carried his undermanned squad to the championship of the Mission Prep Christmas Classic with a plethora of feathery jump shots as well as some thunderous throw downs. Throughout his career his jump shot would be described as solid, but a tad on the flat side, however, at this event his shot looked smooth throughout as he hit a number of 3s from all angles. His first step is solid and he definitely has a burst to the rim as he converted a number of dunks well above it. In addition, he ventured into the post and exhibited a Kobe-esque turnaround jump shot that was sweet. He needs to improve his handle while being pressured, but he is definitely in the conversation of being part of the ESPNU 100.
