Kiel's commitment has weight

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Call it the Gunner Kiel effect.

LSU was once just one of many schools being considered by tight end Desean Smith from Lake Charles (La.) Barbe. Then Kiel, rated the nation's No. 2 quarterback, committed to the Bayou Bengals last week.

"I think LSU kind of popped up there since they signed that quarterback," Smith said of the four-star prospect from Columbus (Ind.) East. "I'm a hybrid tight end. I can split out there to wide receiver. They've got a quarterback that can chunk it. That sounds pretty good."
