LA JOLLA, Calif. -- A group of seagulls squawked as a warm beach breeze swept through Country Day School's football field last week, the only noise aside from the coaches' whistles and cars zipping past the adjacent boulevard. It was relatively serene until suddenly Jordan Poland decided it was a little too quiet.
"Wake up!" the USC commit yelled. And just like that, the 6-foot-7 offensive lineman got his teammates' attention.
It was a savvy, calculated move by Poland, who begins his second year at Country Day after moving to the San Diego area from Arizona. By the sound of it, he has settled in nicely. A little fatigue is nothing compared to what he's been through.
