No foolproof formula

LOS ANGELES -- Intrigue and mystery always envelop both the USC Trojans and the Pac-12 when there is a change in head football coaches, an event that can be predictably unpredictable.

The latest Pac-12 coaching change occurred with the Oregon Ducks, the acknowledged conference power alongside the Stanford Cardinal. The innovative Chip Kelly has departed Eugene, Ore., for the uncharted waters of the NFL to find out whether his "revolutionary" spread offense can reinvent the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Ducks have been fortunate in their coaching hires. From former head coaches Rich Brooks to Mike Bellotti to Kelly, the in-house transitions have been almost seamless. Each change has seemed to upgrade the Ducks' production and the performance.
