Dak Prescott's preseason is over after four drives in three games. Since the Cowboys do not play their starters in the final preseason game, Prescott will enter the Sept. 8 opener having completed 11 of 14 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown. He had his first three incompletions of the preseason against Houston but his touchdown pass to Michael Gallup, which was for 12 yards, was typical Prescott. He scrambled, fought through a tackler and found Gallup in the end zone.

As the Cowboys offense comes out for their third series, Jason Witten is showed on the digital board and given a nice ovation by the fans at AT&T Stadium. It's Witten's first game as a player in Arlington since the 2017 finale. He called a game for ESPN's Monday Night Football.

The Cowboys will be in their white jerseys for Saturday's preseason home opener against the Houston Texans, but get used to seeing them more in their blue jerseys for the regular season. The Cowboys will wear blue at Washington, at New Orleans, at the New York Jets, at the New York Giants, at Detroit and at Chicago and will wear their blue jerseys with white pants at home against Minnesota and the Los Angeles Rams. They will wear their Color Rush twice: vs. Miami and at the New England Patriots. They will be in their traditional white jerseys for home games against the Giants, Green Bay Packers, Philadelphia Eagles, Buffalo Bills and Washington and their road game at Philadelphia.

Sources tell ESPN's Ed Werder that the Dallas Cowboys' latest offer to Ezekiel Elliott would make him one of the two highest-paid running backs in the NFL. That offer would be more than Le'Veon Bell's $13.5 million per year with the Jets and under Todd Gurley's $14.375 million per year with the Rams.

Linebacker Sean Lee has practiced the last three days, and anticipates he will play Saturday at least some against the Houston Texans. Lee suffered a slightly sprained medial collateral ligament in the first padded practice while in Oxnard, California, and returned to practice on Tuesday. “I think it's just good to get live reps, particularly as a linebacker,” Lee said. “Tackling live is something we don't do, so being able to get that under your belt, that live full rep, always helps.”

With his holdout at 27 days, Ezekiel Elliott could face fines and repayment of a prorated portion of signing bonus money from the Cowboys totaling a little more than $2 million. He is subject to a fine of $40,000 each day he misses, and the team can seek up to 25 percent of his $4.087 million signing bonus proration. If he misses a regular-season game, he would miss out on roughly $226,000 each week. Whenever the holdout ends, will the Cowboys enforce the penalties?

After learning of the passing away of Luke Laufenberg, the son of close friend and Cowboys' radio analyst Babe Laufenberg, Jason Garrett could barely keep his emotions in check. When asked about Luke, who battled cancer, Garrett said choking back tears, “Luke was an amazing young man. You guys have heard me talk about fight a lot. I don't know that I've ever seen a better example of that in my life. What he's gone through over the last couple of years, the spirit that he had every day, to battle through it, to always be thoughtful about the people in his life, ‘How's my mom doing? How's my dad doing? How's my brother doing?' Amazing. You'd walk into the room and he'd just light up. Whatever was going on, he just had this way, this strength unlike I've ever seen. Unlike I've ever seen in my life. It's such a tragedy. It's so hard to understand. But I know I will be and everybody who ever knew him will be forever inspired by the life that he lived.”

Undrafted rookie offensive lineman Brandon Knight returned to practice this week despite a torn plantar fascia. He suffered the injury in a practice in Oxnard, California, and missed the first two preseason games but has taken team and one-on-one snaps the last two days. A completely torn plantar fascia is easier to play through than a partial tear. Not all plantar fascia injuries are the same. Amari Cooper's form of plantar fasciitis is more related to his heel.

Most of the talk surrounding Jaylon Smith's contract extension has been the comeback from the serious knee injury, but what about his football traits? “He's very instinctive. He's always around the ball. He's got tremendous physical ability. He can run, he can hit,” Jason Garrett said. “Like all linebackers, he has a nose for it, a feel for it. He's around the ball in the run game. He's around the ball in the passing game. He's just an impactful guy. Physically, he has everything you want. He just keeps getting better and better and better the more he plays. There's a lot to like about him.”
