San Diego State didn't hire Chuck Long because of his days as a quarterback with the Detroit Lions or Los Angeles Rams. The Aztecs didn't hire Long because as an Iowa quarterback he finished runner-up to Bo Jackson for the Heisman Trophy in 1985. The biggest reason they tapped Long to awake what many believe is a sleeping giant is the remarkable success he's had as offensive coordinator at Oklahoma for the past four seasons. Long can bring a national championship ring and three Big 12 championship rings into the living rooms of San Diego recruits.
