Oldies but goodies

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants started the oldest outfield in the history of Major League Baseball on Saturday.

Anchoring the Geritol outfield were 41-year-olds Barry Bonds (who will be 42 in July) and Steve Finley. The baby of the bunch was 39-year-old Moises Alou, who will turn 40 on July 3.

The three veterans entered the game with a collective 1,303 home runs and a combined 21 All-Star Game appearances.

ESPN's Pedro Gomez covered the Oakland A's home and away nearly every day from 1992-97 for the San Jose Mercury News and Sacramento Bee and then became the national baseball writer and later a general columnist at the Arizona Republic before becoming an ESPN bureau reporter in 2003.
