Aug. 8: We're in lock-down mode

August, 7, 2008
The city seems to be on edge for the opening ceremonies. President George Bush is in town, more than 100,000 spectators are expected, there is secrecy around the event itself -- that is a lot of people and a lot of tension. There is so much riding on the success of the Games for the Chinese.

They amped up security for our office building Thursday. Officials always do before the start of the Olympics, but they swept with dogs, added metal detectors and sealed off entrances. I can't speak to the rest of the city. The Chinese government is not that forthcoming on the topic, but the perception is there. We received a poorly translated document on the security procedures, which include that only permitted vehicles can use roads close to any of the venues.
