• Lloyd McClendon was fired as Pirates manager on Tuesday, one loss and one month short of what would have been a unique distinction. McClendon was poised to become the first manager in major-league history to record losing records in five consecutive seasons -- all of them full seasons and all for the same team -- in his first tenure. (The Pirates needed one more loss to clinch a sub-.500 mark at the time of McClendon's firing.)
