Playing with the numbers: SECA splits

Years ago, when I was a teenager, and the Internet was a mere twinkle in Al Gore's eye, Bill James came up with the concept of secondary average ( click here to head to ESPN's secondary-average stats page).

What is secondary average? It's a measure of what a player does, other than hit for average, to put runs on the scoreboard. The formula ESPN uses is:

(Total bases – hits + walks + steals – caught stealing) / at-bats
