Draft Kit '05: AFC Position Battles

What is there to learn about fantasy football in mid-June? Plenty. Jobs can be won and lost in the endless string of minicamps, coaching camps and drill extravaganzas that unfold before training camp and the preseason.

And though the results aren't always immediate, a snot-nosed rookie can impress by, say, picking up a few playbook wrinkles in the summer. When the season is swirling down the crapper in Week 8, a coach might remember and make a move in the kid's favor. Details, people, details.

So familiarize yourself with these five AFC position battles, pronto:

Cleveland RB: Reuben Droughns vs. Lee Suggs
Droughns hasn't done himself any favors with his holdout threats, especially with Suggs coming off an impressive late-season run and William Green still lurking in the background. And though Droughns is unproven over the long haul, he is more likely than Suggs to hold up as a feature runner and less likely to completely flake out than Green. The Browns want a base power-run offense, and Droughns -- though not exactly a workhorse -- runs low and is a very shifty and productive running inside and in short-yardage situations. Expect Suggs to steal carries here and there and get some third-down work.
Winner: Droughns
