Out with saves. In with S&M

Any sabermetrician worth his salt knows there's something seriously wrong with using the save as the defining metric for baseball closers. And to get things back on track, we could all use a little S&M.

I'm talking, of course, about shutdowns and meltdowns, two new stats that have emerged in just the past couple of weeks. (What did you think I meant? Hat tip for the reference: Crashburn Alley.)
