KC looked bad but will be ready

January, 3, 2011

Of all the playoff lines that were posted on Sunday night -- Colts minus-3 versus the Jets, Eagles minus-3 versus the Pack, Saints minus-10 versus the Seahawks -- the most intriguing one to me was the Chiefs being three-point 'dogs to the Ravens … at home.

For so many reasons, the opening number makes sense. For one, the Chiefs rolled over at home in the last game of the year against the Raiders, losing by three touchdowns. You could argue that the Chiefs pulled back -- even subconsciously -- because they had the AFC West wrapped up. But there was still the question of playoff seeding. So there should have been some motivation. Instead, while Oakland sat its best players on offense and defense, Darren McFadden and Richard Seymour, it still managed to gain 200 yards on the ground and harass Matt Cassel into 22 incompletions and two interceptions.

No wonder I've heard so many pundits claim the Ravens will win this game handily on Sunday. They don't see how Cassel can handle the inevitable Ravens blitzes that are going to come his way.

And yet, almost as soon as this line was posted, it moved from Ravens minus-3 to Ravens minus-2.5. Which means, at least initially, the wiseguys saw some value on the Chiefs. What gives?
