How to bet the East, Southwest Regionals

March, 16, 2011

I'm writing this as I jet west for Vegas.

I can see windmill farms 40,000 feet below, although they aren't helping me get there any faster. When I land at 9:30 a.m. local time I will check into my hotel, maybe take a nap (I had a 7 a.m. flight), maybe grab some lunch by the pool and then walk around The Strip to say hello to some friends and contacts. I can write all this because I know my wife does not read my column, and I can confess to you what I would not tell her. It's not that I'm afraid. It's just that the guilt -- her in cold and damp New Jersey, me doing business in the Vegas sunshine -- would be too much for me to handle. I am sparing her the details. She'll appreciate that.

But, before any of that happens, I must file for you Wiseguy Bracket, Part 2.

In this version last year's champ, Sal Selvaggio of, offers up his assessment of the East. And column regular Teddy Covers shares what he thinks about the Southwest. As always, their against-the-spread picks and straight-up picks are at the bottom of the capsules.

Southwest: Teddy Covers

Kansas Jayhawks (1) vs. Boston U. Terriers (16)
Spread: Kansas minus-22.5

"In general with the bigger point spreads I don't get involved with full game wagers. What I will do is this: Kansas is going to get crowd support and I will take them in the first half and if they don't cover I will take them again in the second half. BU is a nice story but they are outclassed in this one. And with these 20-point-plus spreads I attack the half wagers rather than full game wagers because the line is too big."

ATS pick: pass on the full game wager
Straight-up pick: Kansas

UNLV Rebels (8) vs. Illinois Fighting Illini (9)
Spread: UNLV minus-2

"UNLV is a better team than Illinois. They match up well, Illinois doesn't have the dominating low-post presence. The Illini were 6-10 their last 16, I made money betting against Illinois and I will continue to do so. But if it goes much higher I won't recommend it because this is a game that the wiseguys already jumped on, since this line has moved two points against Illinois already. It opened at pick."

ATS pick: UNLV
Straight-up pick: UNLV

Vanderbilt Commodores (5) vs. Richmond Spiders (12)
Spread: Vanderbilt minus-2
