Each recruiting season, there are the battles that can make the difference between becoming a championship contender or an also-ran. They make the difference between earning a raise or earning a spot on the hot seat.

These aren't necessarily the 10 best remaining uncommitted recruits. Instead, it's the 10 battles we project as being the fiercest between now and signing day.

Kendall Sheffield | Missouri City (Texas) Marshall
Cornerback | 5-11 / 180 | ESPN 300 Rank: 9

Who wants him? Texas A&M, Texas, Baylor, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, and a host of other programs.

Front-runners: Texas A&M, Alabama, LSU, Texas and Oklahoma

Dark horse: Ohio State

Final breakdown: Sheffield has been very good about keeping his opinions about programs a secret. He is taking time with the process and said he won't announce until the Under Armour All-America Game in January. Recently, Sheffield has taken unofficial visits to LSU, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. His five official visits will be a much-anticipated decisions when the time comes. -- Damon Sayles
