  • Jeff Bagwell is the topic for Jack O'Connell of the Hartford Courant. He finds the Astros slugger as self-demanding as ever, driving himself to improve upon a 2002 that he viewed as a year out of balance with the rest of his career. With Lance Berkman snoozing, Bagwell has been leading the Houston offense to this point.

  • This is a short piece by Gordon Wittenmeyer of the St. Paul Pioneer Press about former Twins catcher Earl Battey who has been a bit under the weather of late. Battey still maintains ties with the team, especially catcher A.J. Pierzynski with whom he goes back a ways. Wittenmeyer provides an e-mail address to which fans can send Battey their best wishes. There is a great photo featuring Battey and his batterymate Jim Perry in the new book Classic Baseball: The Photographs of Walter Iooss, Jr. It's one of the best baseball photos I've ever seen.

  • What is the Tigers worse sin? That they lose all the time? No, it is that they are dull and colorless. Bruce Jenkins of the San Francisco Chronicle was on hand to see them lose their 17th game in 18 tries last night in Oakland and was stunned at the utter anonymity of their roster.
