Going into this weekend's draft, everyone expected Willis McGahee to be chosen in the first round. But no one expected the Buffalo Bills would be the team to take him.

At the draft, everyone in the press pit turned with jaws agape, trying to figure out what general manager Tom Donahoe was thinking by making such a pick. Granted, just about everyone was willing give Donahoe the benefit of the doubt considering his impeccable track record as a talent evaluator, but that doesn't really apply to this situation.

My corner grocer can see that McGahee has the most talent of any running back available. That's not the issue. The move is troubling for other reasons. First, the move gives the team no immediate help from its first round draft pick. Donahue thinks that first-round picks tend to be overrated, but just take a look at the rookies who earn starting spots this year, and you'll see that most of them were taken in the first 32 picks.
