  • Fire Jerry Manuel? Not a good idea, writes Mike Downey of the Chicago Tribune. A 15-16 record is not the end of the world as the final records of many recent teams that got off to similar starts well illustrate.

  • Mike Lupica of the New York Daily News says it's time for Mike Piazza to start carrying the load for the Mets. He cites his six RBI as proof that Piazza needs to step it up. How much blame should Piazza shoulder, however? He does, after all, have the highest OPS among team regulars.

  • Mike Veeck of the Northern League's St. Paul Saints has some interesting promotions coming up in the 2003 season. There is a schedule of these creative ballpark outings in today's Detroit News as they report on the good and the bad in minor league event nights.
