Writers Bloc: Cubs' second home

  • Do the Chicago Cubs have two home stadiums? Michael Hunt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel thinks they do after what he's witnessed at Miller Park this week. By his estimation, 80 to 90 percent of the crowd was there to cheer on the Cubs in favor of the local nine. Is this embarrassing for the Brewers, or are they just glad to have the turnstiles clicking for a change?

  • Bob Wolfley of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel has been leafing through the Brewers media guide and found himself fascinated with some of the off-field pursuits of major league umpires detailed therein. Everyone knows Joe West sings country, but what about the rest of them?

  • There's a lesson in this somewhere: Former Cy Young winner Denny McLain is working in a 7-11 store as part of a work release program. Angelique S. Chengelis of the Detroit News reports that McLain must do this and live in a halfway house as part of finishing his eight-year prison sentence for embezzlement. McLain has had one of the most problematic post-playing careers in baseball history, to say the least.
