New York Rangers: It's no sure thing that Mark Messier will be back with the Rangers for his 25th NHL season. If New York GM Glen Sather had the best interests of the team in mind instead of any sentimental attachment to the Rangers captain, Messier would be urged to consider retirement.

Florida Panthers: Stephen Weiss reached his first goal of making the Panthers last season. For Florida's No. 1 draft pick from 2001 (fourth overall) to start making an impact, Weiss will have to work hard this summer to improve his strength and fitness.

Los Angeles Kings: The Los Angeles Kings continued to revamp their roster after missing the playoffs for the first time in three years. Winger Craig Johnson will not be offered a contract and will become an unrestricted free agent July 1, and defenseman Chris McAlpine and forwards Mikko Eloranta and Ken Belanger will not return next season. Toronto Maple Leafs: Rumors of Bill Watters' departure have been rampant in Toronto, but now the assistant GM of the Maple Leafs wants to make sure he isn't a lame duck. Watters is forcing the Leafs to make up their mind by telling them he won't go to the draft in Nashville, Tenn., if he doesn't have a new contract.
