Detroit Red Wings: Columbus unrestricted free agent Ray Whitney signed a four-year, $12.5 million deal with the Red Wings, according to Canadian sports network TSN. Detroit fills a need for scoring after center Sergei Fedorov signed with Anaheim earlier this summer. Pittsburgh Penguins: If he returns as expected, Mario Lemieux will have just five teammates age 30 or older on the Penguins. If the Pittsburgh captain and owner is going to make a lasting impact on his team's future, Super Mario will have to take on a more nurturing role with his younger teammates. Florida Panthers: Recent surgeries to Vaclav Nedorost's shoulders didn't scare Florida GM Rick Dudley from acquiring the center in a trade July 19 with Colorado. Although Nedorost won't likely be back until November, Dudley said the Czech forward will be in fine shape after rehab, if not better than before.
