Detroit Red Wings: Detroit GM Ken Holland has reportedly narrowed the number of teams interested in Curtis Joseph, but there is still a major holdup to trading the goalie and his $8 million-a-year salary. "There's not a lot happening in general this summer, and I think economics are the reason," Holland told the Detroit Free Press.

Carolina Hurricanes: Carolina forward Erik Cole appears healthy after recovering from a broken leg and surgeries on his shoulder and knee. Whether he'll be in Hurricanes training camp depends on whether the team changes its offer of a two-way contract for the 24-year-old entering his third NHL season.

Vancouver Canucks: Vancouver tried to sign forward Ray Whitney but came up short when the winger took a three-year, $9.75 million offer from Detroit last week. Other than re-signing his own players, Canucks GM Brian Burke said he's spent the summer "watching other teams sign players."
