  • Here's a great column about Bobby Bonds by Bill Conlin of the Philadelphia Daily News. He recalls the Bonds of his prime and how he and his speedy fellow Giant outfielders Garry Matthews and Gary Maddox vexed Phil's manager Danny Ozark.

  • Bryan Burwell of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch discusses the National League Central race and points out that the Cubs are 11-40 at Busch Stadium since 1996. He also poses the theory that Chicago and St. Louis are "baseball's two great cities," something that is sure not to sit well in some locales.

  • It's a pennant race, says Blaine Newnham of the Seattle Times -- nothing is necessarily as it seems. He reminds us that at this time of year what seems so dead certain on Thursday can have changed dramatically by Monday.
