In the wake of George Steinbrenner's latest laments
about the sorry shape of his team followed by a
recanting, Mike Lupica is getting fed up with his act.
"Steinbrenner is not just the biggest front-runner in
town, he can be an incredible phony," he writes in
today's New York Daily News.
Now a team that really should be worried is the
Seattle Mariners. They have seen their chunky lead in
the American League West disappear and now find
themselves in a death struggle with the Boston Red Sox
for the Wildcard slot. Darrin Beene of the Tacoma
News-Tribune wonders what the final 19 games will hold
for the locals. Is pessimism or optimism the order of
Todd Zolecki of the Philadelphia Inquirer starts an
uphill battle by floating the name Jim Thome for
National League MVP. He doesn't argue hard for it, but
points out that, without Thome, the Phillies would be
in a world of trouble.
