  • In the wake of George Steinbrenner's latest laments about the sorry shape of his team followed by a recanting, Mike Lupica is getting fed up with his act. "Steinbrenner is not just the biggest front-runner in town, he can be an incredible phony," he writes in today's New York Daily News.

  • Now a team that really should be worried is the Seattle Mariners. They have seen their chunky lead in the American League West disappear and now find themselves in a death struggle with the Boston Red Sox for the Wildcard slot. Darrin Beene of the Tacoma News-Tribune wonders what the final 19 games will hold for the locals. Is pessimism or optimism the order of the day?

  • Todd Zolecki of the Philadelphia Inquirer starts an uphill battle by floating the name Jim Thome for National League MVP. He doesn't argue hard for it, but points out that, without Thome, the Phillies would be in a world of trouble.
