New York set for spending spree

  • The Yankees are good at one thing: spending money. So says Mike Lupica of the New York Daily News, a long-time observer of all things Steinbrenner. He calls their latest round of player grabs, "The greatest buying and spending spree that professional sports has ever seen or will ever see&"

  • But are the Yankees spending themselves into trouble? Is such a thing possible? Dave Perkins of the Toronto Star suggests that now that George Steinbrenner is pulling the strings again in Yankeeland, fiscal sanity has left the building. Will the Yanks and, to a lesser degree, Red Sox, burden themselves so greatly that upstarts like Toronto and Baltimore could rise to the top when the rich boys falter under the weight of their own largesse?

  • With testimony time nearing for Barry Bonds, this would be the perfect opportunity for him to truly convince the world that he has not used steroids to enhance his natural born and well-practiced baseball talents. So suggest David Whitley in today's Orlando Sentinel.
