Lakers, Rockets open on ugly note

Karl Malone shot 1-for-11 in the first half. Kobe Bryant missed 15 of 18 shots in the second half. Shaquille O'Neal made only 4 of 14 free throws the entire night as the Lakers, in their first game of the 2004 playoffs, shot a miserable 32.9 percent from the field.

And if you thought they were bad, you should have seen the team that lost.

For the Houston Rockets' part of the 72-71 fiasco Saturday night, they committed 20 of the 35 turnovers in the game and went 2-for-12 from the 3-point line despite being the third-best shooting team in the league from that distance during the regular season.
