Paterson Catholic gets defensive

December, 24, 2009
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Fuquan Edwin, the gritty heart-and-soul senior of Paterson (N.J.) Catholic, beamed afterwards.

The Cougars had just defeated No. 25 Winter Park (Fla.), 62-54, to win the 37th City of Palms Classic championship Wednesday night and Edwin was ecstatic because this just showed Pateron Catholic's newfound belief in defense was worth every minute, every ounce of sweat spent on it. Understand that in past years, Paterson Catholic won with zone defense and a high-octane scoring attack. This year coach Damon Wright changed that mindset.

"We spend nearly two-thirds of practice working on defense," said Edwin, ESPNU 100's No. 23-rated small forward and Seton Hall-recruit. "We came here to play great teams and players; we made a statement with our defense."
