Start of something special

March, 16, 2010
Is this a prelude of things to come? UCLA-bound Tyler Lamb (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) went head-to-head with USC-bound Bryce Jones (Woodland Hills, Calif./Taft) in a much-anticipated showdown between Mater Dei and Taft. Mater Dei would squeak out the victory 75-73, but there were many other storylines that made this game special.

Tyler Lamb vs. Bryce Jones
Lamb's team came out on top by the narrowest of margins and he had his stamp on the game throughout in a variety of ways. He scored 21-points (7-of-11 from the field including three 3s), handed out 4 assists and teamed up with Keala King to bottle up Jones most of the game. Jones didn't put up gaudy numbers (12-points on 4-of-8 shooting), but he did grab 9 rebounds and handed out 4 assists.

Overall, Lamb is much stronger than Jones and is very solid in all facets of the game, although his outside shot is streaky. In addition, Lamb can defend a 2 or a 3 and he plays the passing lanes very well. Jones, on the other hand, needs to get much stronger to do battle in the Pac-10, but he has more upside than Lamb due to his bounce and length. Jones will undoubtedly get stronger at the next level and if he is willing to tighten up his handle and jump shot, his upside is immense.
