Why Michigan State lost to Duke
This season, Insider will feature the writing of six current NCAA basketball players, contributing their thoughts on issues facing their conferences. Michigan State forward Draymond Green continues the series by looking at the Spartans' rivalry with Michigan, Minnesota's surprising loss to Virginia and how turnovers hurt MSU against Duke.
Our conference won our second straight Big Ten/ACC Challenge this week and the best overall win I'd have to say goes to Michigan [they beat Clemson 69-61]. Clemson always has a lot of athletes on their team and Michigan isn't that athletic. I thought that they would really struggle, but they ended up winning pretty impressively. I actually watched the game from our hotel in North Carolina -- all of the first half and a little bit of the second half. Michigan struggled in the first half, but in the second half they turned it on and Tim Hardaway Jr. had a great game for them. He's very versatile, can shoot it from all over and he has great ballhandling skills. He's going to be vital to their success this year.
I had a feeling that, based on the guys they have in that system, it would start to work this year. Coach Beilein now has guys that really work in the system and it's starting to show. I know they're our big rival and people will be surprised I was pulling for them. That's fine. We didn't get the win, so at that point it's just about the Big Ten winning the challenge.
