Pros have overstayed their use on the Olympic stage

I played USA Basketball and have been a longtime proponent of the program and its importance. However, I believe that USA Basketball now needs a new mission.

Right now, the main purpose of USA Basketball is to win medals in international competition. To me, that is too narrow a focus. I think the mission of USA Basketball needs to be to grow the game. Period. If USA Basketball grows the game, medals will follow.

First, a little bit of history and the way I see it. In 1987, the United States lost to Brazil and Oscar Schmidt in the Pan American Games in Indianapolis. In a dazzling display of offensive skill, Schmidt scored 46 points, and Brazil clipped the United States by five, 120-115.
