Best player in college hoops is ...

Each week during the college basketball season, ESPN Insiders Jay Bilas and Jeff Goodman will weigh in on the biggest questions in the sport.

The discussion: If you were picking one player in college basketball to have on your team for the entire 2013-14 season, who would you choose?

Jay Bilas: This is a tough call, as the freshman class is worthy of the plaudits it has received so far, and there are returning talents like Marcus Smart of Oklahoma State, Russ Smith of Louisville, Doug McDermott of Creighton and Gary Harris of Michigan State who are worthy of consideration.

For me, it would come down to three players: Smart, Duke freshman Jabari Parker and McDermott. There is no single player who can take a talent-deficient team and lead it to a conference or national title, but these three players can be centerpieces who can take over games and also blend in without being resented. All can challenge teammates to raise their levels of play, and do so by putting their arms around their teammates rather than simply pushing or prodding them.
