New Orleans is completing its strange journey from the Sun Belt to the Southland. In 2010, the school announced plans to move to Division III, because it lacked the funding to continue as a Division I team. The reason cited by the school was state budget cuts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which rolled through campus in 2005. And although there is certainly some truth to that -- enrollment declined by several thousand students post-Katrina -- UNO faced some of the same challenges that were posed to other public institutions that received less government funding as a result of the Great Recession.
