Southern had a spectacular campaign last season, which ended in a narrow defeat to No. 1 seed Gonzaga in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Along with Texas Southern, the Jaguars were one of the SWAC's best in more than a decade, trailing slightly behind the Tigers last season in terms of overall efficiency. Southern experienced success largely off the strength of a robust defense, which finished in the top 100 of adjusted defensive efficiency. Roman Banks' team was second nationwide in defensive effective field goal percentage, allowing opponents to convert just 30 percent of 3-pointers and 41 percent of their 2s.
