Yale gives Jones extension through 2025-26

Yale men's basketball coach James Jones, who is coming off a 22-8 season and an Ivy League championship, has signed a contract extension through the 2025-26 season.

14-seed Yale (+7) doesn't win, but is the second underdog to cover in the tournament. The Bulldogs fall 79-74 to 3-seed LSU. Game stays under closing total of 157.5

LSU survived a massive second-half challenge against Yale to win 79-74 and advance to the second round in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2009. The last time the Tigers were in the tournament, they blew a double-digit halftime lead and it nearly happened again on Thursday as Yale limited their offense and found clutch performances from the bench. But LSU made its free-throws down the stretch to advance.

Have to hand it to Yale and veteran coach James Jones -- the Bulldogs have done a great job limiting LSU on the offensive end while finding ways to compensate with leading scorer Miye Oni struggling. The Bulldogs made it a game in the second half when it threatened to turn into a blowout at halftime.

Yale leading scorer Miye Oni is struggling, but the Bulldogs are staying in the game with LSU thanks in part to Alex Copeland, with nine second-half points, and their bench -- which is outscoring the Tigers. After a strong first-half, Tremont Waters is scoreless in the second for LSU.

LSU has a 16-point halftime lead thanks, in part, to its play in the paint. The Tigers have more field goals in the paint than Yale has total field goals, and are outrebounding Yale as well. Yale hasn't shot the ball well, either. The Bulldogs are shooting 29 percent, which would be their worst percentage of the season. Yale entered the NCAA tournament shooting 49.8 percent, sixth in Division I.

LSU guard Tremont Waters is from New Haven, Conn., and off to a great start against Yale. Waters said he grew up so close to Yale, "if I had a strong enough arm, I could probably throw a rock to Yale's basketball facilities." He also played AAU with two Yale players. Waters has 13 points and six assists in the first half. No LSU player has recorded 10 assists in an NCAA Tournament game since assists became official in 1984.

Azar Swain has provided a spark off the bench for Yale, making both his 3-point attempts while also getting fouled on another -- making the two free throws that go with it. LSU coach Tony Benford has been animatedly telling his players to watch for the 3. The Bulldogs have used it to get themselves into the game.

The story line going into LSU's first-round NCAA tournament game against Yale was whether the Tigers could put all the off-court distractions behind them. In the first three minutes, LSU looked ready to play, making three of its first four shots while Yale started 0-for-5. Yale got some good looks, but it's going to have to start making those buckets to have a shot against the bigger, more athletic Tigers.

Yale students (from left) TJ Noel-Sullivan, Carlo Abelli, John McKissack and David Weller made the long trip to Jacksonville for the NCAA tournament. Noel-Sullivan, Abelli and McKissack left at 5 am Wednesday morning to make the 16 hour drive, rotating drivers every 2 1/2 hours. McKissack hasn't gotten much sleep - he was in England when the bracket was announced, and decided then and there he'd make it to Jacksonville.
