Zach Lee vs. Zack Wheeler

October, 19, 2010

When the Los Angeles Dodgers took right-handed pitcher Zach Lee in the first round of the 2010 Rule 4 Draft, the immediate industry reaction was that the team -- known to be in tight financial straits due to the McCourts' divorce -- had punted the pick, as Lee was probably the most unsignable player in the draft, having turned down inquiries from other clubs involving potential $5 million-plus signing bonuses. The Dodgers took advantage of Lee's dual-sport status and signed him to a backloaded contract worth $5.25 million after he decided against going to LSU to play baseball and football. This was a deal that at least two teams ahead of the Dodgers would have topped had they known he would sign.
