Chapman a work in progress as a starter

October, 28, 2011

Cincinnati Reds left-hander Aroldis Chapman has thrown twice here in the Arizona Fall League, and will make one start, on Monday, before heading off to winter ball to continue stretching out so the Reds can look at him as a potential starter for 2012. His first outing was impressive but brief, as he threw 18 pitches, 17 of them fastballs, starting out at 93-95 mph but finishing the inning at 99-101 and at least working in the vicinity of the zone. His one off-speed pitch that day was an 89 mph changeup or split-change -- he signaled in warmups that he was throwing a splitter, but he used to throw a straight change and the pitch didn't have the typical bottom of a true splitter.
