Latos a good addition for Reds

December, 17, 2011

The Cincinnati Reds give up a lot of future value, but nearly all of it surplus value for their club, in exchange for a legitimate front-of-the-rotation starter. The San Diego Padres swap quality for quantity in a building move that helps them but doesn't entirely add up for me.

Mat Latos, the 25th-best MLB player age 25 or younger, has a strong three-pitch mix with above-average control, the ability to keep the ball down and very good feel for pitching given his age (he turned 24 earlier this month). Latos wore down at the end of 2010, getting knocked around in his last five starts and carrying that over to the beginning of 2011, but after May 1 of this year, he looked a lot more like the dominant starter he'd been for most of the previous season, hitting 95 mph and faster again in September.
