Sometimes, teams get tired of waiting and decide Plan B is preferable to inertia.
The Cubs and Indians both had their eyes on Cincinnati's Austin Kearns for a while, but grew tired of being rebuffed by the Reds. So Monday night, they made a deal with each other. The Cubs traded Jason Dubois, a right-handed power hitter better suited for the American League, for Jody Gerut, whose playing time in Cleveland was limited because of the development of Coco Crisp and Grady Sizemore.
Gerut and Dubois joined Eric Byrnes, Jay Payton and Preston Wilson as outfielders who have changed teams this month, and there are sure to be more names tossed around between now and the July 31 deadline.
