Selig feeling steroids heat

Chat with Joe Morgan, 11 a.m. ET Friday.

Everyone is talking about Bud Selig's new proposal for more severe penalties for steroid use, and I believe a lot of people are misreading the situation.

I don't think Selig is trying to force anything down the union's throat. Selig is under pressure from Congress and some owners, and he's basically passing that pressure along to the union.

While I'm not necessarily saying the union should accept the proposal as is – a 50-game suspension for the first offense, 100 for the second and a lifetime ban for the third – the union certainly should work with Selig to come up with penalties it can live with. I definitely like the three-strikes-and-you're-out feature. In a recent ESPN special on steroids, I said I'd like to see a 30-game suspension for the first offense, 60 for the second and a lifetime ban for the third. I still like those numbers.

The main thing is the three-strikes-and-you're-out – how you get there isn't as important to me as that final answer.
