Future is bleak for Kansas City

On Aug. 15 at 7:07 Pacific Daylight Time in Seattle, Felix Hernandez threw his first pitch in his third major-league start, against the Royals. At 7:29, the game ended.

No, not officially. It didn't rain. It never rains in August, in Seattle.

But at 7:29, Runelvys Hernandez grooved a fastball to Mariners shortstop Mike Morse, who drove the ball over the left-field fence for a two-run homer and a 2-0 lead. And while baseball's not like any other sport and no two-run lead is ever truly safe, you got the distinct feeling the game really was over -- because Felix Hernandez is almost sublimely good and the Royals are almost sublimely bad.
