The following interview appears in the June 14 issue of ESPN The Magazine.
KM: When you hit a homer in your first big league at-bat, what went through your head? Were you thinking about family and friends and your path and being from Atlanta?
JH: Not at all. None of it hit me until a week and a half later, because I was focused and it was game time. Once I get on the field, I'm playing baseball -- and that helps me stay sane when there are so many other things going on off the field. So for that at-bat, I went up to the plate, said, "Let's play some baseball," and enjoyed it. I'll never forget it.
