October is a time when some players rise to the occasion, sometimes playing over and above what they seemed capable of in the summer. In this preview of the Fall Classic, we will identify players from the Tigers and Cardinals who are at the top of their game heading into the World Series, taking a revealing look at the numbers behind their solid playoff production.

1. Two Tigers hitters peaking at the right time
Curtis Granderson: He has not only come up with some extra power in October, but he has shown more plate discipline. He struck out in 29 percent of his at-bats and averaged nearly three strikeouts for every one walk in the regular season. He has struck out in less than 10 percent of his at-bats in the postseason, with four walks and three strikeouts. His slugging percentage was .438 in the regular season. In the playoffs, it is .719.
