Spring training position battles

Atlanta Braves: Right Field

The Heyward era begins: Jason Heyward can turn in that No. 71 on his back for a lower figure. The prized prospect will be the Opening Day right fielder for the Braves, David O'Brien of the Atlanta JC reported Friday morning.

Manager Bobby Cox informed Heyward of his decision in a morning meeting. Heyward did not disappoint this spring, hitting .366, with four doubles, a home run and five RBIs. He has hits in 13 of the Braves' first 16 games.

The question with Heyward has always been when, not if, he would make it to the major leagues this season. Had the 20-year-old faltered this spring, the job could have gone to Matt Diaz.
