Scouting the Phillies and Cardinals

Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels and Roy Halladay give the Phillies a rotation that is the envy of baseball. Scott Rovak/US Presswire

The storylines in the NLDS matchup of the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies predominantly revolve around the vaunted Philly rotation, which is probably as it should be. When you have two pitchers with a good chance to finish in the top three of the Cy Young voting in Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee, and a third in Cole Hamels who would be the staff ace for many other teams, any playoff series is going to revolve around their performance

But while the Phillies had the best staff ERA in baseball, the Cardinals somewhat quietly led the National League in runs scored, so they do have some sticks that theoretically could give those arms a hard time.
