Here's Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks talking about his seven shutout innings on Friday.

Remember that Cubs pitching staff that caused so much consternation earlier this season? That group put up 31 consecutive scoreless innings before Brad Brach gave up a run in the ninth inning on Friday, its longest streak since 1976. Chicago beat Arizona 5-1 at Wrigley Field behind Kyle Hendricks, who threw seven shutout innings while striking out 11 in picking up his first win of the season. Chicago has allowed two runs or fewer in six of its last seven contests. After a 1-6 start, the Cubs have evened their record at 9-9.

Kyle Hendricks has been creeping up on the kind of breakthrough performance he had today against Arizona. His game score was 80, tied for the fourth-best of his career.

The Cubs' Kyle Hendricks is likely done after throwing seven shutout innings and 100 pitches today against Arizona. Hendricks struck out 11, the third time in his career that he's hit double digits. Hendricks entered the game with a total of 10 strikeouts over his first three starts.

Kyle Hendricks' best outing of the season nearly ended on a sour note. Hendricks was struck in the shin by a Christian Walker drive back up the middle and the ball ricocheted all the way into foul territory along the wall on the third-base side. But Hendricks is staying in the game with one down in the seventh and the Cubs leading the Diamondbacks 5-0.

Short delay here as home plate umpire Dan Iassogna is hit in the mask by a Merrill Kelly wild pitch. Iassogna appears to be fine. Is it me, or does it seem like there has been a rash of those incidents this season?

The Cubs announced a game-time temperature of 44 degrees with the wind out of the north at 26 miles per hour. According to my weather app of choice, that translates to a real-feel temperature of 37 degrees. Expect a lot of first-pitch swinging today.

It will take a poke to get one out at Wrigley Field today. There's a cold north wind blowing in at a rapid rate, and put extra emphasis on the word "cold". Off on the horizon, the sea (Lake Michigan) looks very angry today. April baseball!

Walker's 2-run HR helps Diamondbacks sweep Braves, 4-1

Christian Walker continued his remarkable late-innings production with a two-run homer in the seventh, Luke Weaver got Arizona off to a good start and the Diamondbacks beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1 on Thursday to complete a three-game sweep.
